    Since the first Cowdens skirmished with the Comanches in the 1850s until the present day, the JAL Ranch and the Cowdens have been part of the history of the American Southwest.  Pettit, a former rancher and a Cowden descendant, traces the history of the Cowden ranching empire from its beginning in Palo Pinto County, Texas, in 1853, to the JAL Ranch in southern New Mexico, in 2005.  This is a story of a real ranching family over six generations that includes tales of cowboys and Indians, buffalo and cattle, open range and barbed wire, water rights and good grazing land. Pettit tells the story well without any of the good ole boy flavor, but with the style of a literary Novel of the West-which this book could almost be except it includes end notes, bibliography, and index.  This is a marvelous history of a ranching family from past to present.
