Hittson Cemetery designation

The Texas Historical Commission recently designated the Hittson Cemetery as a Historic Texas Cemetery. This distinction means the cemetery has been legally recorded through the THC’s Historic Texas Cemetery Program, an important step in ensuring its preservation. This designation is reserved for cemeteries that are at least 50 years old and documented through the Historic Texas Cemeteries process to record their historic association and significance.

Located in the Pleasant Valley community approximately 12 miles west of Mineral Wells, Hittson Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Palo Pinto County. Its location near Oakes Crossing in the Hittson Bend of the Brazos River is of historical significance, as Oakes Crossing marked the crossroads for travel in pioneer days of West Texas. The oldest grave in the cemetery dates to 1861 and is of Jesse Hittson, one of the founding fathers of Palo Pinto County. The cemetery is organized and maintained by the descendants of several other families whose names are also prominent in the history of the county.

A dedicatory ceremony to commemorate this historic designation will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7 at Hittson Cemetery. Speakers for the event include former state representative Carol Hittson Kent, who serves as a trustee of the cemetery.

Cemeteries hold valuable historic information and they are often the last reminders of early settlements’ historical events, religious beliefs, lifestyles and genealogy.
“This designation is a tool that will increase public awareness of these important cultural resources,” said Mark Wolfe, executive director of the THC. “Knowledge and education are among the best ways to guarantee the preservation of the historic cemetery.”

Palo Pinto Historical Commission member Cindy Lewis expressed her thanks to the Hittson Cemetery trustees for actively pursuing this historic designation.  “Their numerous hours spent on this endeavor allows Palo Pinto County history to be preserved for generations to come,” said Lewis. “We are honored to be participating in this historic dedication.”
